Decorative and practical, lavender wands have been made for centuries. Also known as batons or bottles, they were originally placed in drawers and clothes chests to protect the contents with lavenders natural moth repelling properties. Today they still work against moths and also make an interesting home decoration whilst providing the clean, fresh floral scent of lavender.
Jar of Wands
Taking two hours to create, they are made up of freshly cut lavender with the flowered ends bent over at the top so that they are caged in the stems. Interwoven with this top part is quarter inch ribbon which covers the stem-caged flowers in a colourful and attractive pattern. This covering provides extra protection for the flowers and allows a slow release of the scent at the same time. If you want more scent you can place the wand near a window to catch the warmth of the sun or hang over a radiator in winter. You can also gently roll the wand between your fingers.
Close up of wand weave
Over time the flowers natural aroma will inevitably fade and the wand will need refreshing. All that is needed to revitalise your wand is to place a few drops of lavender oil onto it for it to continue to scent your home.
These wands make an original, thoughtful gift that is both attractive and practical. They are great for garden lovers or those who like the fresh, clean aroma of lavender. Try placing them in a vase, or using them in clothes draws and airing cupboards to freshen your bed linen. Alternatively, you could harness lavenders calming qualities and place one under your pillow to help with a good nights sleep.
